Auto Insurance

Auto insurance is important and mandatory in all states to operate a motor vehicle. This not only protects you in case of an accident, but it also protects other drivers as well. Different states carry different forms of minimum coverage dependent upon what type of insurance you get. We will focus on the state of Kentucky for discussion of these minimum coverages.

Auto insurance requirements vary by state. The typical components of an auto insurance policy are auto liability coverage, uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage, comprehensive coverage, collision coverage, medical payments coverage and personal injury protection.

Liability coverage pays for bodily injury and property damage sustained by others due to an accident that you caused. Bodily Injury Liability protects your financial interests when you cause injury to another party in an accident that you caused. Property Damage Liability Coverage pays for the damage to the property of others, such as houses, fence posts, mailboxes, etc.

Collision covers damage to your auto as the result of a collision with another vehicle or with a fixed object such as a utility pole, a house, a guard rail, and more. Comprehensive Coverage pays for damage to your car caused by non-collision events such as theft, vandalism or hail, wildlife or domestic animals, road hazards, and more.

Uninsured Motorists Liability coverage is for accidents that involve another motorist who does not carry insurance. This covers your damage and medical expenses in place of the other motorist’s non-existent insurance that would have normally paid for this. Underinsured Motorists Liability is similar coverage to the Uninsured package, but this covers motorists who have insurance but not enough to pay for your medical bills and damage caused by an accident. First Party Benefits coverage protects you and your family no matter who's at fault in the accident, this coverage pays for medical payments. This is usually the first payment that gets paid out in a claim.
